![]() Entertaining Disco, Freestyle, and Dance Music fans in South Florida for over three decades. Your Music, Your Time. On behalf of Miami Disco Fever Leo Vela would like to thank you for keeping your music alive.
South Florida got its first taste of the new sound that would become disco during the early seventies when Recording mogul Henry Stone and his legendary label TK records gave a voice to young and not so young artists Like Betty Wright, George McCray, Chocolate, and Timmy Thomas, who where known only to black audiences in the R & B world and then later to a local funky white boy from Hialeah who became “KC and the Sunshine band”. This music changed South Florida and the Dance music scene forever. This new sound was introduced to mainstream audiences and excited a new more carefree generation of people and eventually exploded when the Movie Saturday Night Fever brought the Disco phenomenon to the world. Everyone was dancing not just the wild freestyle individual dance moves, like the “Bump” but sensual “Hustle” the touch dancing where partners glided as if floating on clouds across the dance floors spinning round and round to the pulsing beat and the ever imaginative lighting effects that followed. Soon elegant nightclubs like “Studio 54” in New York, and Local mind altering combinations of design, with million dollar sound and lighting experiences like the “Lime light”, “The Copa”, “Scaramouche”, Carlos & Charlie’s, and later hot clubs like “Confetti’s”, the “Four o Clock Club”, “Backstreets”, and Hialeah’s own “Casanova’s. Discothèques first sprang out of Europe and Canada, starting among the Gay community then eventually to the mainstream, and when local Radio Station “96X became “Disco 96 FM” a new love affair with this music and South Floridians began, and continues till today as South Florida is Discos biggest and longest lasting Capital. In 1978 Legendary Radio Programmer and Music genius Frank Walsh programmed “Disco 96” and debuted most of today’s Classic Disco music records and launched the career of “Leo Vela” aka “Mixmaster Layo” who became the first Radio announcer to mix music Nightclub style live on the Radio, and who would become one of the pioneers of the Nations first bi-lingual English & Spanish music format known as Super Q. Leo Vela returned to South Florida Radio in the Nineties when Frank Walsh became the driving musical force that helped create and establish Power 96 that still enjoys success today. As Disco evolved from the funky beats of KC and the Sunshine bands to the 130 beats per minute European sounds of Alex Constantino, producer made groups of interchangeable performers like “Love & Kisses”, “Voyage” and local producers like Louie Martinez who produced “AmanT” and Passion ruled the wave, Then the true Queen of Disco Donna Summer spanned local Divas like Celi Bee, Marti, and although she hails from Quebec, Canada she will always be South Florida’s France Joli. This genre of music also launched the careers of many of South Florida’s best known Night Club Spinners these DJ’s like Ciro Llerena, Bill Kelly, Lewis Martinee, to name a few. They have also become internationally known music producers and many are still making people scream on the dance floors when their seamless mixes blend your favorite songs.Throughout these many years two individuals have been most associated with this music Radio Icon “Leo Vela” and long time concert Promoter “Charlie Rodriguez”.
